Under the oversight of the Army Corps of Engineers, 2RW completed a detailed energy study (DES) of Pine Bluff Arsenal with related engineering design services to support a guaranteed energy savings project. The arsenal was established in 1941 to produce and store armaments in support of US military and allied forces in combat zones worldwide.

Services

ENERGY SERVICES

  • Performed a DES of one million square feet at 130 separate facilities. The study focused on decommissioning fifty-year-old centralized steam generation plants and related distribution networks serving five production areas.
  • Conducted analysis using Trane TRACE™ 700 whole-building simulation software.
  • Created and calibrated baseline simulation using metered data following the Federal Energy Management Program’s M&V Guidelines.
  • Quantified anticipated energy savings by updating model with recommended energy conservation measures (ECMs).

DESIGN SERVICES

  • Provided design services for the implementation of production-area ECMs that were identified in the DES.
  • Prepared construction documents for central steam system decommissioning, with replacement electric boilers in more than 50 facilities and four major process areas.
  • Designed chiller and pump replacements for cooling systems and electrical system upgrades.
  • Conducted site visits, prepared as-built drawings, and provided critical information for owner and construction personnel.
Results

The estimated annual energy savings due to the DES and related services is $4.7 million.
