Loudoun County Public Schools Brambleton Middle School

Scope of Services
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEP/FP) Engineering

A rapidly growing student population in Loudoun County is driving the need to build high-quality schools quickly and efficiently. In response, Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) has developed school prototypes that can be easily adapted to the requirements of different sites and communities. Brambleton Middle School was the first facility built on a new two-story prototype. It serves 1,350 students in grades six through eight utilizing the “house” concept for each grade. Public spaces are organized along a central spine with two instructional wings and an enclosed courtyard that supports outdoor learning and provides daylight to the classrooms. The sustainability-focused design can be easily adapted to different sites while maintaining continuity of circulation, outdoor gathering spaces, playing fields, and service.

Services

2RW provided MEP/FP engineering for this new school, which opened in 2017. Services included the design of low-voltage and audio visual/information technology systems. The MEP/FP design incorporates environmentally sustainable best practices while meeting the requirements of educational facility guidelines and standards.

The sustainable systems include high-efficiency condensing water heaters, low-flow fixtures, and natural and LED lighting with daylight sensors. The facility is comprised of classrooms, a media center, cafeteria, auditorium, gymnasiums, and three unlighted outdoor physical education fields.

Results
  • Basing new schools on a prototype allows LCPS to standardize on equipment, parts, and maintenance procedures. This helps significantly reduce operations, maintenance, repair, inventory, and training costs.
  • The sustainable systems incorporated into the design improve energy efficiency, comfort, and occupant productivity while further reducing operations and maintenance costs.
