Gunston Middle School and Community Center is a joint-use facility that comprises a middle school and community space for Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation. The 50-year old MEP systems had been updated and partially replaced several times over the past decade and were in need of modernization.

Services

Under our term contract, and as the prime consultant on this project, 2RW’s services included:

  • A project kick-off meeting with the design team and County to discuss project goals
  • An on-site investigation of MEP systems
  • MEP/FP engineering to replace more than 100 units and their components, including:
    • Replacement of air-cooled and water-source roof top units, cooling towers and circulation pumps, and water and heat pumps
    • A new building automation system
  • Management and coordination of architectural services, structural engineering, and civil engineering to support MEP work
  • Management of all bidding and construction administration services
Results
  • The renovated systems are more energy-efficient and maintain temperature and humidity conditions in all seasons, making it more comfortable for students, teachers, staff, and community members.
  • Through careful planning and coordination of construction over two phases, disruption to students and staff was kept to a minimum.
