Kaplan Arena’s revitalization is part of William & Mary’s plan to achieve a new level of excellence by 2025. The renovated arena and new state-of-the-art Sports Performance Center will be the home for Athletics Department and will advance excellence in W&M’s 23 varsity sports programs. This project will increase the arena’s capacity, improve the athletics experience, bolster recruitment, enhance the game-day atmosphere for fans, and better serve the W&M community.
This project entails updates to the existing arena and a building addition that houses a new Sports Performance Center. The new center features full-size basketball and volleyball practice courts, sports medicine space, and strength and conditioning areas. The arena will gain a new entrance, lobby, and academic area and upgrades to the student section, spectator and concourse club seating areas, hospitality areas, courtside club, restrooms, and locker rooms.
2RW first conducted an MEP assessment to review and document the condition of the arena’s existing HVAC and plumbing systems. From the study’s findings, the team developed a plan for retaining some of the existing building system components and replacing or upgrading others with new and refurbished equipment to balance W&M’s energy efficiency and budget requirements.
Additionally, 2RW is providing MEP design services for:
